Following a re-launch of the Young Driver Support Programme, ten drivers have been given the opportunity to train with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
An open day to promote the re-launch was held on 27 January at the Volvo dealership of former racing champion John Cleland, who is the founder of the programme. The full event was hosted by John Cleland himself, and was supported by the IAM Borders group and local IAM members.
Here, young drivers and their parents were given the opportunity to go on a demonstration drive with an IAM observer, after which they were provided with a full assessment of their driving by both their observer and black box technology.
The re-launch of the programme was a great success, with more than 120 people attending the event. Following this, ten young drivers have signed up to the scheme to train for their full Skill for Life with the IAM.
Under the Young Driver Support Programme, those who have now signed up to begin their training will be reimbursed by John Cleland for the full fee of £139.
Following the success of this scheme, dedicated to improving the driving standards of young people in the local community, Cleland is committed to expanding the programme to other areas of Scotland.
Cleland said: “If we have the opportunity to cut road deaths, cut government costs due to road accidents and make youngsters safer and more confident drivers for just £139-a-head, to me it’s a no-brainer.”
