Following the guidelines set forth in the city’s regulations is one of the most important aspects of the sign design and installation process, said Kip Husk, founder and owner of Husk Signs in Evansville, IN.

An attractive, outdoor sign is essential to the success of a small business. That’s why it’s vital to select an experienced sign contractor who will not only design and install a sign, but ensure it complies with municipal regulations.

Many cities and towns have ordinances that dictate the size, height, placement, the type of lighting or even the color of a business’s sign. Without knowing what type of sign is appropriate for the business’s location, the sign contractor will be hard pressed to recommend a design.

Regulations can vary greatly from each city to state. In some cases, different neighborhoods located in the same city have different regulations governing signs. It’s essential that the sign contractor research and investigate the specific ordinances that govern a business’s exact location.

“Following the guidelines set forth in the city’s regulations is one of the most important aspects of the sign design and installation process,” said Kip Husk, founder of Husk Signs in Evansville, Ind.

“Unfortunately it’s frequently overlooked by many sign contractors who design and fabricate a sign without checking that it complies with city ordinances,” he said.

When that occurs, the business owner is left holding the bill for a sign they can’t use, Husk said.

Some municipalities also require businesses to obtain a sign permit before a sign is erected. Husk said a reputable sign contractor will help a business owner navigate the permitting process as well.

Business owners should also select a sign contractor that will provide a detailed drawing of the proposed sign prior to approval. That way, the business owner can not only sign off on the design, but share the design with a landlord, if applicable.

Husk said sign contractors should also be well-equipped to install a sign properly. Otherwise, business owners risk shoddy installation and maintenance issues down the road.

“Sign contractors should have cranes of varying heights to aid in installation, trailers, forklifts and delivery vehicles capable of getting the sign to the location without damaging it,” Husk said.

To avoid these potential issues, research the capabilities and services offered by a sign contractor before enlisting them to design, fabricate or install a sign.

“Finding a sign contractor that provides comprehensive services will save business owners money and prevent unnecessary hassle,” Husk said.
