A steward of the motorcycle lifestyle and business will be honored next month when Robert Althoff, dealer principal of A.D. Farrow Co. Harley-Davidson, receives the Don J. Brown Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2013 Top 100 Dealer Awards Gala, Feb. 15 in Indianapolis.
The Don J. Brown Lifetime Achievement Award (“the Brown Award”) is given to representatives of the powersports retail community who have demonstrated a lifelong dedication to the business, the lifestyle, the community and the sport.
The award was established in 2010 in honor of the late Don J. Brown, a founding editor of Dealernews, a lifelong proponent of the motorcycle lifestyle and the industry’s leading researcher and adviser for many years.
Past recipients include John Parham, founder of J&P Cycles and the National Motorcycle Museum; and Bob and Jim Jones of J&W Cycles, the Missouri dealership which has been named a Top 100 Dealer every year in the competition's history.
Althoff (pictured here) receives the Brown Award this year in recognition of his outstanding efforts to further the motorcycle business and the rider lifestyle – from fundraising programs benefiting charities throughout central Ohio to business lectures with students at the nearby Ohio State University.
He is also recognized for assuming the lead on dealer-facilitated membership drives for the American Motorcyclist Association.
Since taking over A.D. Farrow in 2003, Althoff “has ensured it has remained a star in both the motorcycle world and also among Columbus’s business community,” said Rep. James B. Renacci of Ohio’s 16th Congressional District in a congratulatory message.
Althoff has delivered presentations or hosted events more than 20 times at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University. “The soft tone that Bob utilizes to share his story and passion for the motorcycle industry and, in particular, his love and respect for the Harley-Davidson brand, is both hard-hitting and thought-provoking,” said Daniel D. Oglevee, senior lecturer of finance at the college. “I personally admire Bob’s thoughtfulness and unassuming nature, as he has been involved in so many charities where you never hear his name but, over time, come to realize his involvement.”
Althoff bought his first motorcycle on his 16th birthday from Dick Klamforth, AMA Hall of Famer and three-time champion of the Daytona 200.
Althoff is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and served in the Peace Corps in Southeast Asia – where, incidentally, he completed his first frame-up restoration of a Triumph Tiger. Before acquiring A.D. Farrow, Althoff worked in the securities industry and in 1994 was named one of the "Ten Outstanding Brokers in America" by Registered Representative Magazine.
As owner of the three-store A.D. Farrow network, Althoff has served as an elected member of Harley-Davidson’s National Dealer Advisory Board. And during the last two years, A.D. Farrow has paid for a $39 one-year AMA membership for each of the nearly 1,400 customers who bought motorcycles and/or completed rider training classes at A.D. Farrow.
Althoff said he believes Don Brown’s 1986 speech at a special emergency meeting of industry leaders inspired a plan to solve a then-ongoing downward sales trend by uniting around industry threats – notably, the health of the dealer network. And this issue may be the most important one confronting the industry today, he noted.
Althoff will be honored during the upcoming Top 100 Dealer Awards Gala, Feb. 15 in Indianapolis, in conjunction with the 2013 Dealer Expo.
The Top 100 Dealers for 2013 were announced in December. The Feb. 15 awards gala will reveal winners of the Special Merit Awards, and the coveted Dealer of the Year for 2013.
