The new Language Icon was selected within hundreds of submissions.
Como, Italy (PRWEB) January 30, 2013
Language icon is a symbol that indicates “there are multiple languages available” in a given interface, and a “new language selection can be made from where the language icon is present”. The language icon can especially be integrated to multilingual interfaces such as webpages, applications and software to provide a visual hint for foreign users to choose a language.
The Language Icon Initiative
The language icon Initiative was founded in order to provide a visual solution for switching language. The icon was deemed necessary because no such icon existed to signify language and prior solutions were not effective. A website was built on languageicon.org, describing the new icon and its application.
While the “Language Icon” was celebrated by many, a significant number of graphic designers suggested that a publicly voted design competition should be held so that a new icon reflecting the preferences of general public could be chosen in a fair manner.
The Language Icon Design Competition took place between dates August 10, 2011 to January 10, 2013 as a two-stage competition. A’ Design Award & Competition platform was used to run the contest as it provided functionality to organize multi-stage design competitions. During the first stage of the competition, hundreds of design proposals were collected. Among the collected entries, 9 best icons were selected as good candidates. Afterwards, selected entries were displayed online for public voting. During the second stage of the event, public voting took place. Around ten-thousand votes were recorded from 120+ countries indicating their preference for the ideal Language Icon. The icon design titled “Turnstile”, submitted by Farhat Datta has been selected as the winner of the Language Icon Competition as her design incorporated both “Switching” and “Language” concepts in a simple manner.
