Greenville, SC (PRWEB) January 31, 2013
Bon Secours St. Francis Health System introduces a new procedure to help ease the crippling pain experienced by arthritis suffers. At noon on Thursday, January 31, a video of a Thumb Arthroplasty—a surgical treatment for patients with severe arthritis in the thumb joint—premieres on St. Francis TV (http://www.StFrancisHealth.tv). The procedure is performed by hand surgeon Timothy R. Brown, MD, of The Hand Center which is an affiliate of the Bon Secours Medical Group (BSMG).
“A thumb arthroplasty is intended to alleviate severe arthritis in the thumb joint,” said Dr. Brown. “During the surgery, the thumb joint is removed, but unlike routine joint replacement surgery, there is no prosthetic. Instead, a tendon from the arm is used to reconstruct the joint. This surgery can help relieve disabling pain and restore movement, enabling the patient to return to daily activities.”
Dr. Brown is one of six board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians at The Hand Center who specialize in the treatment of disorders of the upper extremities—arms, hands and shoulders. Considered the Upstate’s leading provider in this field, The Hand Center has offices in Anderson, Greenville, Seneca and Spartanburg.
After its debut on January 31, the video of the Thumb Arthroplasty surgery will be available on-demand for viewing at any time.
NEW ST. FRANCIS SURGERY CENTER
The surgery was performed at the new St. Francis Surgery Center, conveniently located near ST. FRANCIS-eastside at 209 Patewood Drive. The health system’s fourth outpatient surgery location, the Center has two operating suites designated solely for surgeries of the upper extremities. This, in addition to a full range of post-surgery care, provides quick turnaround and consistency of care.
“The St. Francis Surgery Center is the latest addition to our extensive local network of surgical locations,” said Pat Fowler, VP of Surgical Services for Bon Secours St. Francis. “The Center offers comprehensive treatment, including on-site therapy and rehabilitative services, in one convenient location.”
