Abington Memorial Hospital's Hybrid Operating Room

"The hybrid operating room can accommodate the needs of ...sub-specialists and their patients' unique needs," says John Kukora, chair, Department of Surgery, Abington Memorial Hospital.

Abington, PA (PRWEB) January 31, 2013

Abington Memorial Hospital recently announced the opening of a hybrid operating room which combines treatments offered only in the cardiac catheterization laboratory with those traditionally offered in the operating room.

One of only a handful in the region, Abington’s hybrid operating room(OR) enables specialists to perform catheter-based, minimally invasive work with the capacity to perform full surgical interventions in one place. Vascular surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, neurosurgeons and neuro-interventionalists can work together or in tandem to provide surgical care in one setting. Without a hybrid OR, these specialists operated in separate operating rooms set up to their unique specifications and patients needing more than one of these specialists had to be moved.

“The hybrid operating room can accommodate the needs of all of these sub-specialists and their patients’ unique needs,” says John Kukora, chair, Department of Surgery, Abington Memorial Hospital.

Prior to the addition of the hybrid OR, a patient who suffered a suspected heart attack, for example, might undergo an initial procedure like a cardiac catheterization in the cardiac catheterization lab and if surgery was deemed necessary, it would be scheduled at a later time in the standard operating room. Now, the hybrid OR allows for these procedures to be done in one room with one stay and recovery for the patient.

“This provides more efficient and satisfactory experiences for our patients, possibly with fewer complications,” says Kukora.

The hybrid OR was named in honor of the late V. Paul Addonizio, M.D., previous chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital, and cost $3.5 million. Larger than the typical operating room, the hybrid OR utilizes state-of-the-art fluoroscopy equipment from the catheterization laboratory combined with high definition video technology of an operating room. The addition of 3D imaging monitors enables overlaying MRI and CT scan imaging. By placing multiple monitors around the hybrid OR, physicians, technologists and catheterization lab RNs will be able to view patient progress and vitals.

Some procedures performed in the hybrid operating room include:

  •     Endovascular abdominal repair
  •     Endovascular thoracic aortic repair
  •     Transcatheter aortic valve replacement
  •     Minimally invasive valve repair or replacement
