We wanted to give back, as much as we could, and we wanted to find a way to get our friends, fans, and customers involved in the process – that’s when we came up with the idea of letting our fans choose which charity received the donation.

Giving back has always been a focus for SML, a company that provides full-service as well as labor-only moving services nationwide. The company’s latest endeavor involves donating $1,700 – with a match from CEO Rod Dias – to a local children’s’ hospital, Cook Children’s Medical Center.

This, however, was no ordinary donation. During the month of December, 2012, SML ran a Facebook giveaway that gave entrants a chance to win several prizes – with a catch. SML also pledged to donate $1 for each new Facebook fan it acquired during the giveaway, with no upper limit, to a charity of the fans’ choosing.

“We wanted to do something more than just your average giveaway,” said Carter Schimpff, Director of Marketing for SML. “We wanted to give back, as much as we could, and we wanted to find a way to get our friends, fans, and customers involved in the process – that’s when we came up with the idea of letting our fans choose which charity received the donation.”

On January 25th, 2013, representatives from Cook Children’s Medical Center guided SML CEO Rod Dias on a tour of the facilities. At the end of the tour, Mr. Dias personally delivered the $1,700 donation to Hospital officials, and then surprised them with a matching check from his own personal funds, for a total donation of $3,400.

“[The Cook Children’s Medical Center representatives] explained during the tour what donation money goes towards – things like an in-house Build-a-Bear workshop where children with terminal diseases can enjoy private birthday parties with family and friends. When I saw all the good that was being done there, I realized that $1,700 just wasn’t enough. It was the right thing to do. I wish I could have given more,” said Dias.
