"The distribution model they designed to address our specific problems means our students will no longer have to walk the activation-code gauntlet to get their books.”

Online students at California-based InterCoast College and Career Institute are finally enjoying hassle-free access to their textbooks thanks to the school’s new contract with Nelsonville, Ohio-based ED MAP.
InterCoast customizes its course materials through several different publishers and costs and subscription terms vary from the off-the-shelf versions. The result had been that students have to go directly to each publisher for an activation code to access their online course materials. InterCoast wanted to improve the student experience by finding a supplier that could distribute the eTextbooks without requiring students to handle their codes.
In a deal customized for the college, ED MAP is operating an online InterCoast bookstore that automatically redeems the textbooks’ activation codes through an integration with the students’ e-reader platform. The bookstore consulting and distribution firm’s OpenVue® Student Choice storefront model simply asks students to confirm the digital materials they want. ED MAP also will fulfill orders for print textbooks when digital texts are not available or if a student simply prefers a printed version. Once a student has verified a personal shipping address, the company sends the print materials. InterCoast previously had been handling that function in-house.
Not all the course materials InterCoast sanctions are available digitally, so ED MAP will use established relationships with publishers to help get the remaining texts converted.
Alysha Brown, director of distance learning for InterCoast, said ED MAP’s slate of services promised the school the best chance of streamlining a bumpy textbook acquisition process for the college.
“The company’s capacity to provide traditional-format textbooks when available also allows us to give our online students a choice, and we think this improves overall student satisfaction.” She said the fact that ED MAP also works with colleges and publishers to create digital versions of textbooks aligns with the school’s future needs.
“The most important thing, though, is that the distribution model they designed to address our specific problems means our students will no longer have to walk the activation-code gauntlet to get their books,” she added.
ED MAP’s Vice President of Client Services, Sarah Riddlebarger, said, “ED MAP is pleased to gain another West Coast client and is excited to partner with InterCoast as the college grows its online program.”
In addition to its year-old online program, InterCoast College and Career Institute has 11 ground campuses in California, Maine and New Hampshire offering associate degrees in medical assisting, alcohol & drug counseling, business technology, computerized accounting, electrical training, HVAC, practical nursing, massage therapy, mental health rehab, multimedia specialist, paralegal and pharmacy tech. The college is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training. For more information, please visit http://www.intercoast.edu
