Built in 1883, this was the birth home of Roy Thomson, First Baron of Fleet, born June 5th, 1894. From these humble beginnings, Roy Thomson became one of the most prominent Canadian entrepreneurs and benefactors.

At the beginning of his career, Thomson was selling radios. Unfortunately, since he was selling in Northern Ontario where people didn’t have any radio station to listen to, the business was not going well. That’s why he decided to establish a radio station.

Roy Thomson was also known as a successful newspaper entrepreneur. In 1934, he bought Timmins Daily Press in Timmins, Ontario. This is when he started expanding his radio station and newspaper business all over Ontario with his partner Jack Kent Coole. By the 1950s, he owned 19 newspapers and was the president of the Canadian Daily Newspaper Publisher Foundation.

The Canadian media market apparently wasn’t enough for Thomson, since he founded Canadian Weekly Review for the expatriate Canadians living in the United Kingdom. He soon moved to Scotland where he bought The Scotsman newspaper and soon after that he purchased the Kemsley group of newspapers, which included the Sunday Times. Over the years, he owned more than 200 newspapers in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. His company, Thomson Organization, developed into a multinational corporation, with interests in publishing, printing, television and travel. In 1964, he was made Baron Thomson of Fleet, of Northbridge City of Edinburgh for his public services.

But at the end, he was known as a modest, simple man who took the London Underground to his office every day.
