The Nathaniel Hughson Gallery presents vancouVIEWS, a new series of pastels by Clarence Porter, on display from October 3 to October 26, 2013. A move away from his past industrial and urban landscapes, the pastels in this exhibition are inspired by natural landscapes experienced by Porter visiting the Vancouver area last fall. Included in the exhibition are many breathtaking panoramic views of ocean, sky and mountains. “It seemed that wherever I looked, layers of colour would emerge creating such a rich visual depth. My colour palette in this series runs the gamut from muted to intense, reflective of the feelings I experienced in the moment.”
While Clarence Porter’s career as a commercial illustrator has been stimulating and rewarding, nothing has given him more pleasure, more fun, than working on his personal collection of work and commissions, watching them come alive with the pure colors of pastels. “There is a freedom and lightness I feel when creating the glint in someone’s eye or forming the shadows and reflections falling onto a surface. I’m happiest when preparing my own sanded papers and boards and then watching my ideas take shape and become flush with color.” If Porter isn’t painting, you can find him teaching art at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and at Sheridan College in Oakville.
