Whole-house systems to outpace POU, portable types

Point-of-use (POU) water and portable air treatment systems -- units operating at a single water outlet or in a single room -- are expected to post slower growth than their whole-house counterparts through 2017. Nevertheless, these systems will continue to account for a larger share of both volume and value demand. Gains will primarily benefit from heightened consumer concern regarding potential contaminants in household tap water and air. Conventional filtration media are used in the majority of POU water and portable air treatment systems. However, in POU water treatment, faster growth will be registered by reverse osmosis and other membranes and distillation systems, although from significantly smaller bases. Among portable air cleaners, faster gains will be realized for electrostatic technologies.

These options with better growth prospects are higher value systems that can typically remove a broader range of contaminants compared to conventional filters. Further advances will be promoted by individuals seeking alternatives to bottled water, primarily for economical (the annual cost of using POU water filtration is typically lower than that spent on bottled water) or environmental (if less bottled water is consumed, less plastic is required to make the bottles and there are fewer bottles to landfill or recycle) reasons.
