Beginning today, Arizonans will be able to review health insurance plan options on Meritus’ website—as well as through the federally-facilitated online Health Insurance Marketplace—for coverage that begins as soon as Jan. 1, 2014. Open enrollment runs through March 31, 2014.
Meritus is offering 30 benefit plans for individuals, families and small businesses that are categorized under five levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Catastrophic. Some Meritus plans include benefits like $0 preventive care co-pay, $0 primary care co-pay, $0 generic maintenance prescriptions and $25 per month gym reimbursement. Alternative benefits like acupuncture, therapeutic massage and naturopathy are also covered in some benefit plans.
“We listened to Arizonans—from consumers and small business owners to providers and insurance brokers—and they told us what they wanted in a health insurance company,” said Kathleen Oestreich, CEO of Meritus. “We developed our plans based on that feedback and feel they are in line with what Arizonans want.”
Regardless of the plan category, all Meritus plans meet the required 10 essential health benefits established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA):
1. Ambulatory patient services
2. Emergency services
4. Maternity and newborn care
5. Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment
6. Prescription drugs
7. Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
8. Laboratory services
9. Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
10. Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
Meritus also extends domestic partner benefits, one of the provisions under the ACA.
Meritus is Arizona’s first and only health insurance CO-OP (Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan) established under the ACA. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 1 million uninsured Arizonans. Many Arizonans with incomes up to 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) will also qualify for low-cost coverage due to the tax credit subsidies made available through the ACA.
