German designer Annika Frye has unveiled a new collection of rotation moulded lighting designs – the SEAM polymer plaster lights – using an adapted machine invented by Frye herself, reports De Zeen Magazine. This particular design was developed over several months as Frye experimented with various moulds and additives such as wood and textiles. The mould, with a visible seam joining the two sides together, is built up in three separate layers which are all different colours.
The mould is first screwed together and attached the machine’s centre before being filled with the first of three polymer plastic mixture. The machine, powered by an electric motor, then rotates in three directions at the same time so that the inside of the mould is covered in the mixture. This is repeated once one layer is dried and then discarded after the final drying. At the end of the process, the bottom is cut off and sanded. The finished product is available in green, white or red, with the fixture made from sandblasted plexiglass.
Designer Annika Frye said: “A lot of people contacted me and I had lectures, exhibitions and other invitations. This project is basically the application of the experimental process on a regular product that I can make myself."
