If you logged into a Google Help Forum during the last week of September, you may have found it...less helpful than usual. That's because hundreds of Google elves, the volunteers who post most often to the forums, were being celebrated at Google's 3rd annual Top Contributor Summit in San Jose, California.
Imprezzio Marketing Director Joy Hawkins, a Google Top Contributor since February 2013, said the highlight of the summit was having her picture taken with Matt Cutts, her career idol. "And getting my free Chromebook! It's always great to get a tour of the Google campus and go shopping at the Google store...my one-year-old now has a Google onesie."
According to Google, the purpose of the event is to "celebrate the passion, energy and expertise that Google's Top Contributors bring to our communities." Top Contributors like Joy spend hours voluntarily helping users with Google-related questions and provide the company with feedback on new ideas so they can improve their customer support.
In the past, Top Contributors have advocated for features and improvements like custom colors in Google Calendar, more locations for offline Google Maps on Android devices, and protected ranges in Google Sheets.
The all-expenses-paid opportunity to network in person with the people Joy interacts with online was much appreciated, she said. "I love being a TC because it allows me to understand the world of SEO from the business owner's perspective. At the summit, we got to see some new products that aren't yet known to the public. All I can say is that there are some great things coming to Google in 2014!"
While the specifics of the presentations are covered under a non-disclosure agreement, program highlights included hearing from a Google Senior Vice President, getting to share feedback with product managers and learning about upcoming products.
