Live Maine lobster delivery service, GetMaineLobster.com, wants to ease the concerns of those who are cooking live Maine lobsters for the first time as well as offer alternative ways to cook live lobsters. From boiling lobsters to steaming lobsters, any way you choose to prepare lobsters is easy and the end result is always delicious and memorable.
GetMaineLobster.com recommends butchering the lobster humanely just before cooking. First, place the lobster in the freezer for as long as two hours. Next, remove the lobster from the freezer, making sure it is no longer moving. Then, push the tip of a skewer or sharp knife into the center of the cross on its head.
Boiling is the quickest method for cooking live lobsters. In a large pot that has a lid, pour in enough water to completely cover the lobster. Add two tablespoons of sea salt for every four pints of water and bring to a boil. Next, grasp the Maine lobster from the back, place it into the boiling water and cover the pot once the water has started boiling again. Boil the lobster for 10 minutes for the first pound of weight and three more minutes for each extra pound. Once cooked, drain the lobster and serve hot with melted butter on the side for dipping or enjoy the fresh Maine lobster meat plain.
Steaming lobsters is a bit more daring but some believe that even more flavor develops than with boiling. In the bottom of a large pot, place a steaming rack to hold the lobster. Pour two inches of water into the pot and add one tablespoon of sea salt. Cover the pot with the lid and bring the water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, place the lobster onto the rack, cover the lid and bring the water back to a boil. The lobster should be steamed for 14 minutes for the first pound of weight, plus an additional three minutes for each extra pound.
Grilling lobsters develops excellent flavor and it is a great excuse to spend more time outdoors no matter what time of year. Using the same boiling instructions, par-boil the lobster for five minutes after setting the grill to medium or high heat. With a sharp knife, cut the lobster down the middle and remove the veins in the tail, the green tomalley and the sand sac located behind the eyes. Season the lobster or apply a marinade if preferred and place it on the pre-heated grill shell-side down for eight to 10 minutes until the lobster meat is firm. Serve immediately and enjoy this succulent gift fresh from the cold waters of Maine.
