A recent survey has detailed new insights into how to find work in the Middle East; with a huge emphasis on abandoning LinkedIn profiles and instead applying directly to a company career site.

The commonplace technique of networking appears to be a useless tactic, with only 0.02 per cent successfully landing a role through this method – while there was only a slightly stronger chance through securing employment at just over 3 per cent with LinkedIn.

David Mackenzie from Mackenzie Jones commented: “The rapid rise of technology has certainly encouraged numerous digital connections as well as vastly improved standards, but the problem with the digital age is the multitude of options swamping people’s channels.

“That’s why it’s imperative candidates prioritise the relevant employment avenues, and know where exactly employers will be searching.”

According to the article published on iExpats, these were the following techniques used by employers to source workers:

  •     Career boards: 29 per cent
  •     LinkedIn: 3 per cent
  •     Internal recruitment: 0.73 per cent
  •     Employment agency: 0.3 per cent
  •     Employee referral: 0.06 per cent
  •     Networking: 0.02 per cent
  •     Search engines: 0.003 per cent

The figures indicated that job candidates had double the chance to find a position by submitting their applications to a corporate career site compared to any other technique, and while job boards proved popular, overall nine out of ten workers in the Middle East become employed through either of the two listed approaches.

Research also noted that:

  •     98 per cent of applicants for each role originated from an online source
  •     274 candidates submit their applications for each general vacancy
  •     566 candidates apply for each senior position
  •     Senior job seekers search for work online more than other workers
  •     98 per cent of applicants for each role originated from an online source
  •     Recruiting from a business source

“Getting the balance right from a recruitment perspective is essential, as both parties will be eager to make a good first impression,” added Mackenzie.
