New website http://www.mooctivity.com provides a one-stop platform for online education allowing students to search for and access courses based on key course features, employer recommendations, student reviews and their friends’ experiences.
-- Mooctivity's Story
As college costs continue to soar, MOOCs (massive open online courses) have been heralded as a revolution in broadening access to top tier education for students around the globe.
Tuong-Vi Faber and Nicolas Pennequin shared their excitement about the first wave of MOOCs, but soon realized that a key part was missing. Frustrated by the maze of information and struggling to find courses that stood up to their expectations, they founded Mooctivity to bring ease of access, quality and connectivity to the heart of online education.
“We were both very lucky to get degrees from great places such as Harvard, the London School of Economics, Sciences-Po Paris and Georgia Tech. Mooctivity is meant to be our small contribution to making the world’s best education and the accompanying job prospects accessible to students around the globe.”
-- The MOOC Maze
The rise of MOOCs has been astonishing. In less than two years, Coursera—a leading course provider—has raised $65 million in venture capital and drawn millions of students choosing between hundreds of courses from top schools including Princeton, Stanford, Yale and Wharton (Wall Street Journal, July 2013, http://on.wsj.com/13LZ4Dj). Most of the world’s elite institutions have since joined the MOOC bandwagon, including Harvard, MIT and Berkeley.
With new MOOCs coming online every day from various course providers and little or no feedback about their quality, it has become increasingly challenging for students to cut through the maze of information about MOOCs and to find courses that are relevant to them. What courses are on offer? Which ones are popular? What is the average workload? Are there pre-requisites for taking a course? Which courses are recommended by people that I know? Which courses can add value to my CV?
