An historic city pathway in Cambridge has been covered with ultraviolet particles that provide alternative street lighting as the sun sets, reports the Telegraph. The particles, put there by Cambridge City Council, illuminate at night and have been cited as a possible future of street lighting. The technology has been dubbed ‘Starpath’, and it works by absorbing light during the day for emission over night.
Cllr Andrea Reiner, the executive councillor for public places, said: "This is an interesting idea that the surfacing company asked if the council would like to explore for a trial period. If we decided to put this to use on paths in the city, we would want to balance any safety benefit against the desire to preserve the historic nature of our open spaces."
The technology, developed by Surrey firm Pro-Teq Surfacing, has been suggested as a more energy efficient method of lighting streets at night, but it’s likely that there would be some resistance to its adoption city-wide due to the historic nature of the streets in question. It is currently being trialled at Christ’s Pieces.
Hamish Scott, owner of Pro-Teq surfacing, said: "Councils spend significant sums of money fully replacing existing pathways when the existing surfaces have reached the end of their practical life. Our product is cost effective, fast to apply and fast to set, is an anti-slip surface, while the client has a choice of size and colour of aggregate. Further, the surface is environmentally-friendly and aesthetically pleasing."
Lights 4 Living, a leading company specialising in home lighting of all kinds, has commented on Cambridge’s adoption of Starpath for its street lighting. A spokesperson for the company said:
“There are so many companies coming up with new and exciting ways to save energy with our home and commercial lighting, and Cambridge’s use of Starpath, even on a trial basis, shows that councils around the country are starting to open up to those new possibilities. It shows that you can achieve energy efficient lighting without compromising on aesthetic.”
