West Jordan, Utah (PRWEB) October 30, 2013

Holly Burke, R.N., B.S.N., and EMS/state liaison at Jordan Valley Medical Center and Pioneer Valley Hospital, is the recipient of the 2013 Utah Business Magazine Healthcare Heroes Healthcare Practitioner Award. During the annual Healthcare Heroes reception on October 8, Burke was recognized for her years of dedication to emergency critical care and her primary role in establishing a STEMI Alert Process into emergency departments.

“Holly Burke is a perfect example of a healthcare hero,” said Steven Anderson, CEO of Jordan Valley Medical Center and Pioneer Valley Hospital. “The commitment to her work is admirable, and it inspires the entire medical team to build a positive relationship in order to continue to excel together. Not only is Holly actively involved with our hospitals, but also she’s involved with area fire departments to maintain effective communication and connections.”

Burke has 24 years of emergency nursing experience—12 years in critical care and 11 years working in an emergency department. In 2008, Burke became the director of emergency services at Jordan Valley Medical Center. She worked with a team of healthcare professionals to improve overall patient care in an emergency setting. In the past two years, Burke became the EMS state liaison for both Jordan Valley Medical Center and Pioneer Valley Hospital. As the liaison, Burke helped develop a plan for continuing education for the local fire departments, allowing firemen and women to recertify their critical care skills and providing the opportunity for advanced training.

In addition to Burke’s working relationship with local fire departments, she was also central to the design and implementation plans for a STEMI Alert process in her emergency departments. STEMI is an acronym for ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, which refers to a life-threatening diminishment of blood to the heart. When a patient is treated for acute myocardial infarction, quick decision making and early, invasive treatment is key, so the entire emergency staff needs to be alerted as soon as possible. Burke worked with local fire departments to install electrocardiogram (ECG) machines into each fire engine, which allows fire crews to administer the ECG test before leaving the patient’s location and digitally send the ECG recordings to an awaiting emergency department.

In 2012, the Utah Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Preparedness awarded Burke with the title of “Nurse of the Year.”
