From Pills to Gum and Candy - Medicine Makes a Switch

As consumers learn they can take medicine and supplements via chewing gum and candy, manufacturers and retailers rush to fill demand.

This week there is mounting evidence many consumers are switching to gum, mints, and candy as their leading choice for the delivery of medicine and nutrients. Doctors have known for some time many patients – especially those who have trouble swallowing or who hate taking pills – are much more likely to take medicine that is contained in gum or confections.

“We began manufacturing value-added functional gum some time ago. Demand exploded this year allowing us to expand our operations to new factories in the Unites States, Canada, Mexico, Denmark and Turkey,” said Heather Collins, media liaison of ZOFT Gum Company based in Port St. Lucie, FL. ZOFT manufactures a wide range of functional products that are private labeled for large retailers.

While ZOFT is mostly known for value-added gums, this year's new products include breath mints, candy/lozenges, and lollipops that can be used to effectively boost energy, antioxidants, memory, weight management, vitamin/mineral, fiber, calm, focus, immunity, and more.

Tests show patients take medicine more regularly when it can be delivered in gum or candy. “Most people would rather take a mint than a pill. Popping gum into your mouth twice per day is a lot more enjoyable than remembering to choke down pills,” Collins said.

ZOFT researchers use ingredients that are carefully selected for their proven scientific benefits and regulatory approval. The ingredients are blended into gum, candy, or mints. ZOFT requires each product to be proven through extensive testing to ensure the product is both effective and tastes good.

ZOFT is newly offering their clients the option of Xylitol as a natural sugar substitute for sweetening This ingredient is useful for diabetics and health conscious consumers. Dental and medical professionals around the world are recommending switching from sugar to all natural Xylitol.
