During the month of November, the Downtown Development Authority of Delray Beach launches a social media program to encourage the public to shop local & Meet our Downtown Merchants.

Inspired by the American Express Small Business Saturday campaign that began in 2010, the DDA, in conjunction with RealTime Marketing Group, developed a program through social media that will allow Fans to “meet the Downtown merchants”. The downtown consists of over 400 small businesses and many where the owner is behind the counter providing that personal customer service. This program is designed to share a little bit about the different businesses, the owners, general managers and teams that come together to make Delray Beach such a special place. The merchants are sharing up close and personal details with the public, giving an insight as to why they choose to do business in Downtown Delray Beach.

On the DDA Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/delraydda a new merchant will be introduced daily, giving the public a quick glimpse of the faces and families they really support when they choose to shop locally. “We encourage the public to Like our page and share the stories of these businesses with their friends,” expresses Marjorie Ferrer, Exec. Director, DDA. “Downtown Delray Beach is filled with many small businesses including fashion boutiques, fine art galleries with local artists, salons, and one of a kind specialty shops – but that is not the only thing that makes us special – here, you really get to know the owners making shopping, dining and visiting feel more like spending time with friends.”

This month is not just about Small Business Saturday, but about supporting the local businesses by shopping and dining in their neighborhoods. One of the main goals, and the mission of the Delray Beach DDA, is to market and promote the businesses within the DDA district. “We have mom and pop shops that have been a part of the fabric of our downtown for almost 80 years, and this program will allow us to share a more personal side to the downtown and those that have invested much of their lives here,” says Laura Simon, Associate Director, DDA and native of Delray Beach.

About the Downtown Development Authority:
For the past 41 years, the Downtown Development Authority has assisted in successfully branding Delray Beach as the Village by the Sea. The Delray Beach DDA was created by Resolution 9-71, which became law on March 22, 1971, as a dependent district of the City of Delray Beach.

“The DDA Mission is to enhance and stimulate balanced economic growth through position marketing activities that engage Downtown businesses, residents and visitors while creating a clean, safe, physical and experiential place to live, work and invest.”

The main areas of involvement in downtown development include: Marketing and Promotions; Economic development programs; Security and crime prevention; Traffic and parking; Clean and safe. In addition to the main areas mentioned above, the DDA also works closely with merchants to develop seasonal retail awareness campaigns to generate traffic and sales.
