Workers’ compensation payers should be proactive in developing policies and strategies to address the possibility of injured workers utilizing marijuana to treat pain as medical marijuana is currently legal in 20 states, including DC.

Healthcare Solutions, the parent company of Cypress Care, Procura Management, ScripNet and Modern Medical, today announced that Jim Andrews, R.Ph., executive vice president of pharmacy services for Healthcare Solutions, will present at the National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference® in Las Vegas. The presentation, “High Times in Workers’ Compensation: The Impact of Medical Marijuana” will take place on Wednesday, November 20th from 11:00 AM – 12:15 PM at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

States legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and the conflict between federal and state laws, are causing growing concerns for workers’ compensation payers. Andrews will join a panel of experts to explore the pharmacological, medical and legal aspects surrounding the use of medical marijuana in the treatment of work-related injuries. The panel includes Theresa Genovese-Elliott, M.D., with Spine and Pain Institute of Santa Fe and Albert B. Randall, Esq. with Franklin & Prokopik P.C. Mark Walls, senior vice president and workers’ compensation market research leader with Marsh, will moderate the session. Andrews will specifically address the pharmacological issues related to medical marijuana.

“There are very few studies or data that substantiate the safety and effectiveness of marijuana for the treatment of pain in work-related injuries,” said Andrews. “Workers’ compensation payers should be proactive in developing policies and strategies to address the possibility of injured workers utilizing marijuana to treat pain as medical marijuana is currently legal in 20 states, including DC.”

The conference takes place November 20 - 22 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. For information about the presentation and conference, please visit http://www.wcconference.com or contact pr@healthcaresolutions.com.
