It is important for businesses to consider which areas of their business are potentially more vulnerable to crimes such as theft or vandalism and have their CCTV installed accordingly.

It has been reported by This Is Gloucestershire in the article titled ‘Bicycle Thieves Cashing In On Gloucester Quays CCTV Blind Spot’ published on October 29, the victim of an alleged bicycle theft has discovered a lack of CCTV in a busy area in the Gloucester Quays. It is reported that Gethin Evans allegedly had his £700 bike taken from Gloucester Quays where he had left it locked in a bike rack. The incident led him to realise that, despite a network of CCTV cameras in the area, none are installed in Llanthony Road.
Mr Evans told This Is Gloucestershire that:
“It is very worrying that this is the centre of all the activity at the Quays but you are offered no protection when it comes to the CCTV.”
He added that:
“This part of the Quays is always being used for events such as the markets and it is only going to get busier with all the new restaurants opening, so I find it bizarre that they would not have CCTV there.”
A spokesperson for Gloucestershire police told This Is Gloucestershire that:
“We could encourage people to try and lock their bikes up where there is CCTV coverage, although we understand this isn’t always possible.”
This Is Gloucestershire reports that a total of 1000 bikes have been stolen in Gloucestershire this year, with only 40 of these having been found.
As experts in commercial security systems, AlertSystems closely follow industry news and were interested in these recent comments concerning a lack of CCTV. A representative for the company shared their thoughts, offering advice to businesses looking to install CCTV on their premises:
“This recent story highlights how important it is for businesses to consider the location of their CCTV systems before installation. This news also emphasises how a lack of CCTV in a particular area can provide little information following incidences such as theft, as well as how members of the public can find a lack of CCTV disconcerting.
With this in mind, it is important for businesses to consider which areas of their business are potentially more vulnerable to crimes such as theft or vandalism and have their CCTV installed accordingly. This may be entrances and exits to monitor who is on the premises, or covering stock of high value. Comprehensive CCTV coverage from a high quality CCTV security system helps ensure that sufficient information can be provided to police in incidences of crime, who can then use this to further their investigations.”
