2020 Lawrence, a LEED Gold certified apartment community in Denver’s Ballpark Neighborhood, has won a 2013 Mayor’s Design Award. The multi-family development was one of 15 Denver projects honored for excellence in architecture, design and place-making by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock at an awards ceremony November 6, 2013.
“All of our winners have improved Denver’s cityscape in their own way, contributing to the vibrant, diverse, world-class city we call home,” said Hancock.
Winning projects were selected for their contribution to the public realm through innovative design, and range from renovation of historic single-family homes to new, multi-use commercial projects. Award recipients include Denver homeowners, business owners, developers, and a business improvement district.
“We are always striving to create thoughtfully-designed buildings that innovate and elevate the neighborhoods in which they are built. We are proud that the city of Denver has chosen to recognize our efforts,” said David Zucker, principal and director of development for Zocalo Community Development, the company behind 2020 Lawrence.
One of the nation’s greenest apartment buildings, 2020 Lawrence sports such sustainable features as Energy Star-rated appliances, superior indoor air quality, high efficiency water fixtures, (which use 34 percent less water than standard products), and flooring and other finishes made of recycled and locally-sourced materials. A solar array generates power for the building, reducing the amount of carbon pumped into the atmosphere by roughly 50 tons per year.
Overall, 2020 Lawrence residents are expected to spend 50 percent less on their utility bills than they would living in a similar non-LEED certified building. The 10-story building is the first in Denver to offer composting and an electrical vehicle charging station, available free of charge for residents.
The project also includes a number of community-focused amenities including:
- A work-at-home center, offering a conference rooms, computers and other workplace amenities for telecommuters
- A lobby-level demonstration kitchen and communal living room, featuring a gaming area equipped with Wii and Kinect
- A rooftop lounge area with a hot tub, outdoor kitchen and fire pit
