The Human Capital Institute (HCI), the global institution for strategic talent management, today announced the release of its new research, "Leadership and Emotional Intelligence: The Keys to Driving ROI and Organizational Performance," conducted in conjunction with Multi-Health Systems (MHS). As Emotional Intelligence continues to become a prolific topic within corporate leadership development, the research aimed to reveal the usefulness of Emotional Intelligence in terms of developing leaders, shaping organizational culture and impacting financial performance.
More organizations have come to recognize the importance of Emotional Intelligence and its role in giving leaders an emotional edge above and beyond their technical aptitudes. Comprised of a specific set of observable and measurable emotional and social skills, Emotional Intelligence influences how individuals perceive and express themselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way. In conducting this research, HCI and MHS examined the state of leadership development and the current utilization of emotional intelligence among more than 500 organizations.
Key findings of the research include:
- Leadership Development efforts need significant improvement: More than half of all survey respondents indicated that their organizations’ current leadership development efforts are less than effective.
- Disagreement about the most important leadership behaviors is common: Individual contributors and managers disagree about which leadership behaviors are most critical, with adaptability, coaching skills, problem solving and stress tolerance representing the biggest gaps. Still, both parties recognize the importance of emotional intelligence competencies, such as communication, interpersonal skills and self-awareness.
- Emotional Intelligence assessments are highly effective: Emotional Intelligence assessments are an inexpensive way to impact leadership development, with 60 percent of those who use them indicating that they are effective or very effective.
- Value of Emotional Intelligence: Although organizations that use Emotional Intelligence are three times more effective at leadership development than those that don’t use it, emotional intelligence remains an untapped resource for nearly one-third (29 percent) of organizations.
- Supporting revenue growth: Organizations that use assessments to measure Emotional Intelligence are 16 percent more likely to report positive revenue growth.
"Although more organizations recognize the benefits of including Emotional Intelligence in their leadership development programs, the practice is still not a top priority for most companies," said Carl Rhodes, HCI chief executive officer. "As our research shows, organizations that embrace the concept can give their leaders a new type of intelligence that goes far beyond technical aptitudes to develop their emotional and social skills. What results from this approach are an enhanced leadership development process, stronger organizational culture and, ultimately, improved financial performance."
