Around the world, the holidays are a wonderful time for family and friends to savor the season together. This is when mothers everywhere lovingly prepare the most anticipated holiday dishes to herald the arrival of this delightful time of year. Most of us look forward to the opportunity to indulge in the delicious familiar foods that make us feel good, and the dishes that have been handed down from generation to generation.

To celebrate the international flavors of Christmas, the Hotel Shangri-la at the Ocean in Santa Monica is introducing its exclusive holiday menu featuring its global selection of small plates, “Just Like Momma Made.” This unique assortment of special dishes with over-sized servings meant to share will be served from December 18-25, 2013 in The Dining Room.

With an international culinary staff that caters to the hotel’s global guests, Chef Ryan Steed asked his team, “What dishes did your mother specially prepare for Christmas dinner?” From the variety of suggestions, Chef Steed designed Hotel Shangri-la’s first ever globally inspired holiday menu. Highlights of the small plates include:

  • Bierock are delicious meat-filled pocket pastries originating in Eastern Europe and introduced in the U.S. in the 1880s by German Russian Mennonite immigrants. It includes cabbage, onion and ground beef, and is oven-baked to golden perfection.
  • Sweet Potato Pie is a traditional side dish in the Southern United States from the early colonial days. It is prepared as a large tart with a crust and the mashed sweet potatoes are flavored with brown sugar, nutmeg and butter. What started as a savory vegetable dish is now classified as a mouthwatering dessert.
  • Sisig is a very popular and delicious dish that originated in the Philippines. It is prepared with pork, calamansi, peppers and egg, and then served over white rice.

“We have carefully prepared every dish according to each mother’s exact recipe so diners can enjoy a truly authentic and memorable taste experience,” said Chef Steed. “Everyone can sample our small plates menu and enjoy the best of traditional holiday favorites from around the world.”

Guests enjoy a beautiful ocean view and first-class gastronomy that blends California comfort, fine dining and hushed intimacy. The Dining Room is open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm and reservations are recommended by calling (310) 451-0717, or booking online.
