Bear Claw-Barbary Coast Productions Seeks Sponsors for New Public Television Outdoor Adventure Series, Tom Stienstra’s Great Outdoors, Presented with KVIE

KVIE of Sacramento has agreed to be the presenting station for a new public television series about the Great Outdoors to be hosted by award-winning outdoor author, writer and broadcaster, Tom Stienstra. KVIE, the PBS station in Sacramento, has agreed to be the presenting station for Tom Stienstra’s Great Outdoors, a new series of 26 programs about world-class outdoor adventures throughout the Americas, produced by Bear Claw-Barbary Coast Productions which is currently seeking funding for a public television launch in 2014.

“Tom Stienstra will go anywhere, do anything, and knows how to connect with people,” said Barbary Coast President Jim Schlosser. “The series will capture and celebrate epic outdoor sports, recreation and wildlife adventures with no boundaries, and Tom will show viewers how best to experience them, like no other public television program has done before.”

“With Tom’s strong fan-base and how he has been received, we could easily see approximately 50 percent of the nation’s 353 PBS member stations carrying the series initially, if not even higher, with carriage steadily increasing as other stations discover the series,” said Schlosser, “There’ll be a minute for sponsor messages at the beginning and end of each show. As a general rule, stations that carry the series will air each of the 26 episodes at least once during a given week and then repeat them, for a minimum of 52 airings for most, if not all stations. Many stations will air a particular episode more than once in a week, so the 52 airings is likely a baseline total. The show is so reasonably priced that we anticipate being able to offer sponsors this association with the outdoors and public television for as little as $349 per :30 second spot, per station, for the initial airings, which will even be further reduced to $175 per spot when factoring in 26 reruns.”

As presenter station, KVIE provides public broadcasting services on three digital channels that serve California’s Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, and the Sierra Foothills, the 20th-ranked television market nationwide and No. 3 market in California. The station was established in 1959 and serves 1.4 million households in its designated market area.

Tom Stienstra’s Great Outdoors will feature story lines where Stienstra and guests are propelled forward by adventures with pay-offs. “Anywhere where people go to find the best of the outdoors, we will go there to capture it and bring it to their living rooms,” Schlosser said.

Stienstra will stalk grizzly bears, climb mountains, camp in the shadow of volcanoes, cast to the fightingest fish, and hike, bike, boat, raft, kayak or canoe to find, capture and communicate the innermost experience of the outdoors, Schlosser said.

“Tom has a ‘Wild West’ look and has attracted a huge following in everything he does,” Schlosser said. “He got his start in TV with Mike Rowe (“Dirty Jobs”) and you can see the influence, that natural magnetic ability to connect with people.”

Stienstra’s epigram for the show is, “What sets you free?” Stienstra and Schlosser teamed up to create the CBS-CW special, “Land of Smoke,” which won first place in America for best outdoor recreation show in America.

Among his many awards, honors and film history, he teamed with Stienstra to win first place for America’s best outdoor recreation show for the CBS/CW special, “Land of Smoke.”
