Many times, donations to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank decrease after the holidays. Portwood Dental is helping to relieve some of this need with their annual food drive to help fight hunger in the Baton Rouge area during this time.

February 4, 2013 though March 13, 2013, Portwood Dental on Siegen lane will hold their 2nd annual food drive in an effort to collect food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. When asked why they were holding this event for the second time Dr. John Portwood, Jr. replied, “Our first event in 2012 was such a success for our office and the community that we knew we wanted to make this an annual drive. Our patients enjoyed getting involved in helping the community and we were able to fill two barrels with donations, which will help a lot of families.” Dr. Portwood continued, “Each of our patients will be asked to bring in two items of non-perishable food to contribute. Their names will then be placed in a raffle for a chance to win a $100 gift card to Flemings Steakhouse.”

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is a nonprofit organization which solicits, procures, inventories, and warehouses donated food and other products. This food is then distributed to a variety of community agencies such as pantries, meal sites, homes, shelters, and soup kitchens which serve the people in need in eleven surrounding parishes. The needs of the food bank grow yearly as the needy in the community expand.

Mike Manning, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank stated, “With the new statistics released by the Federal Government showing an increase in the working poor, the Food Bank continues to face increased need.” He continued, “This is truly a great way to start the New Year - by supporting your local food bank.”
