A study published on January 2012 in the International Refereed Research Journal supports Ultimate Vocabulary's belief. In this study, the problem that was focused on was how despite the fact that there are 11-13 years of English instruction provided in Malaysian schools, there are still some students that fail to master English as a second language. Using purposive sampling to gather 46 respondents - all graduates of a Kota Kinabalu, Sabah public secondary school - the study made use of the popular social media site, Facebook, to gather data.
The respondents answered the queries of the researchers through a dialogue journal posted as on Facebook, which also allowed them to give their input on the answers of the other group members. The results of the study provided a fresh perspective on why some Malaysian students still find it difficult to learn vocabulary in English. As Ultimate Vocabulary’s Managing Director Marc Slater noted, “Not all of the students have the same capacity or inclination to learn English in a set pace. Some students get an improved vocabulary faster than others, while others get left behind.” Among the reasons stated in the study for why some students find learning vocabulary in English difficult, the research cites the following: the speed at which the teacher speaks; the vagueness of the words used in communication; or lack of adequate explanation in the student's native tongue. The study even identified a problem in the simple fact that some students view English only as a subject that they must pass in order to move on to the next year level.
As a challenge, Marc Slater reiterates that it's not always only the students who must make an effort in vocabulary improvement. “It's just as important for the teachers to reassess their approach when it comes to teaching language. Our company’s vocabulary software should be able to provide that much-needed supporting tool for the teachers as they set out to be better educators of English as a second language.”
This is in line with the conclusion of the study, which found that “teachers should take the initiative to ensure their teaching plans are effective while students’ learning becomes meaningful through a myriad and mixture of teaching methods to cater to a majority of the students’ learning styles and preferences.”
In this case, “practice makes perfect” applies both to students and teachers.
