An article by the San Francisco Chronicle reports that cyclists that incur traffic infractions can go to bicycle traffic school to reduce ticket costs. Linus Bike encourages cyclists to attend traffic classes in order to educate themselves in cycling and road safety.

On February 6, in an effort to promote traffic safety for cyclists, Linus Bike encourages bike riders to attend traffic safety classes offered at UC Berkeley.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “people ticketed in Alameda or on the Berkeley campus while riding their bikes have a new option to reduce their fine by taking a two-hour safety class taught by certified bicycle safety instructors.”

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition is hoping to bring Bicycle Traffic School to more cities in the East Bay, CA by partnering up with the local police and UC Berkeley, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

“This is a step forward in traffic safety that I believe will help save lives,” comments China Reevers, a Linus Bike representative. “The more educated cyclists are while on the road, the less traffic infractions caused by cyclists should occur. Imagine the possibilities of cycling safety that can be taught in a class room.”

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that by attending one of the classes, the fines for cycling in a pedestrian zone will be reduced from $220 to $50. According to the article, the classes are free, open to the public and occur monthly on the Berkley campus.

“This program will allow us to reach bicyclists who might not choose to attend a safety class voluntarily, but who are sometimes the people most in need of this information,” says East Bay Bicycle Coalition's education coordinator, Robert Prinz. “We have also been working with the Alameda PD to ensure that enforcement will be targeted to have the biggest impact on safety, without discriminating against cyclists disproportionately.”

“This service should not be limited to those who violate traffic laws either. If all cyclists attended one of these classes every six months or annually, our dream of having safer roadways will come to fruition,” adds Reevers.
