On February 7, Linus Bike, developer of city bikes and bicycle safety advocacy group, offers their support and seal of approval for ‘The Bear’s Bicycle’, a children’s book that teaches youth the safety and dangers of bike riding.

In a column published by The Coloradoan, Rick Price, Ph.D., a League of American Bicyclist cycling instructor, gives his review on the children’s book as well as his commendation towards the book’s value towards educating youth of bicycle safety.

“I’ve been surveying children’s literature on bicycling during my three years of teaching in the city’s Safe Routes to School program. There are some wonderful children’s bicycle books available and there are some absolutely terrible bicycle safety books — terrible because they are boring and because they try to teach kids by lecturing them rather than engaging them,” comments Price. “In a read-aloud program, this book could reach elementary school kids, seniors or parents and CSU student volunteers all at the same time.”

In “The Bear’s Bicycle”, written by Emilie Warren McLeod and illustrated by David McPhail, the characters Tommy and Bear portray the sensible and oblivious roles of cyclists. According to Price’s review, “Tommy walks his bike across the street after checking for traffic while bear rides right into a milk truck. Tommy watches for hazards such as opening car doors, debris or dogs while bear is oblivious to all these dangers. Tommy stops at stop signs, keeps to the right and warns pedestrians of his approach. At the end of the afternoon he wipes his feet before entering the house. Bear does the contrary to all of Tommy’s actions.”

“It is important for children to be aware of the dangers of the road,” comments Jason Latty, Sales Manager for city bike distributor Linus Bike. “Road safety should begin as early as possible and a clever story such as this can help children reach milestones in bicycle safety. Linus Bike offers its support towards all literature that promotes the safety and well-being of our youth, especially while on the road.”
