Families providing in-home care for elderly loved ones are sometimes hesitant to seek assistance, even when their responsibilities become overwhelming.

An assisted living service in Detroit has a new option for such families: “Try an Angel.”

Visiting Angels-Detroit today announced that under its “Try an Angel” program, Detroiters can hire a caregiver for four consecutive hours at half the regular price. The promotion runs through February 28, 2013 and carries no obligation to those who “Try an Angel.”

“Sometimes, family caregivers are reluctant to hire a caregiver because they are not comfortable getting help from a non-family member,” said Joyce K. Stallings, Director, Visiting Angels-Detroit.

“’Try an Angel’ allows families to experience the benefits of having Visiting Angels-Detroit provide care to an elderly relative, while enjoying a significant savings,” Stallings said. “We believe this 4-hour in-home trial will encourage families to make a long-term commitment to our services.”

Like other Visiting Angels franchisees around the country, the Detroit office provides non-medical, in-home care services to seniors, including companionship (sitters), light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, errands, shopping and walks.

Studies have shown that family caregivers are at increased health risks that often come with their demanding job. These risks include high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and depression.

While the average amount of time a person provides care is about 20 hours per week for eight years, the job can go on for much longer, sometimes decades.

“On our web site,, we list 13 tips for handling caregiver stress,” Stallings said. “’Ask for help” is one, and ‘Take a break’ is another. With ‘Try an Angel’, family caregivers can achieve both.”

“Try an Angel” is only available to new customers and once per client. For more details, including additional stipulations, call Visiting Angels-Detroit at 313-272-8282. Visiting Angels-Detroit is the only Visiting Angels franchise in southeast Michigan offering “Try an Angel.”
