Youngstown, Ohio (PRWEB) February 01, 2013
The St. Elizabeth Dental Residency Program is the winner of the 2012 Ohio Department of Health (ODH) James F Quilty Champions of Oral Health Award.
The ODH presents the award each year to those who carry on Dr. Quilty’s legacy of positively impacting the oral health of Ohioans. The residency’s program, “A Collaborative Effort to Expand Capacity and Improve Access to Dental Care,” was chosen for the award for its success in increasing the number of children, elderly, medically-compromised, special needs and low-income adults receiving dental care.
The plaque presentation to the St. Elizabeth dental program will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the St. Elizabeth Dental Clinic, located inside the St. Elizabeth Ambulatory Care Center, 1001 Covington St., Youngstown.
The St. Elizabeth dental residency program has provided oral health care to underserved children and adults since the mid 1970s, and has continued to grow to meet the growing demand and needs of the patients.
Most recently, the dental residency program increased the number of dental residents, and the dental clinic was expanded from a four- to eight-operatory clinic. In addition, the program supports a mobile dental service, utilizing two mobile dental buses to provide comprehensive dental health services and education throughout Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Dr. Quilty served as chief of the former ODH, Division of Maternal and Child Health. Under his leadership, the ODH dental program grew and continues to operate as one of the outstanding state dental public health programs in the United States.
Recipients of the award are presented with a plaque and their names are engraved on a perpetual plaque on display at ODH.
