The U.S. Fund for UNICEF announced today the winners of the annual Pier 1 Imports®/UNICEF greeting card contest. The theme this year is “A Holiday of Hope and Joy.” Atticus Silbaugh, age 8 from Shrewsbury, Pa., is this year’s recipient of the Grand Prize Award for his artwork, which will be reproduced as an official UNICEF greeting card, and sold exclusively at Pier 1 Imports stores across the country and on Pier1.com during the 2013 holiday season. The U.S. Fan’s Choice Award was presented to Vivian Lu, age 12, from Arcadia, Calif.

“Our long-standing partnership with Pier 1 Imports is one that we hold closely,” said U.S. Fund for UNICEF President and CEO Caryl Stern. “The annual greeting card contest is not only a valuable way to help support the work that we do, but it is a wonderful platform to engage and educate America’s youth on what the world’s most vulnerable children face each day of their lives.”

About the winners:

  • Atticus Silbaugh’s Grand Prize-winning artwork represents a snowy day in his town. His inspiration was his quaint house on Main Street and his love of playing in the snow. In addition to Atticus’ design on this year’s greeting card, he will receive a $5,000 scholarship and $500 worth of art supplies for his school – Shrewsbury Elementary School.
  • The 2013 “U.S. Fan’s Choice” winning design was created by Vivian Lu and features two hands holding a snow globe. Within the globe are three children holding hands, Vivian’s interpretation of “A Holiday of Hope and Joy.” Vivian will be awarded $500 in art supplies, which she generously donated to her school.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of all UNICEF cards sold at U.S. Pier 1 Imports stores and on Pier1.com during the 2013 holiday season will go to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support UNICEF programs in more than 150 countries. These programs provide lifesaving medicines, vaccines, nutritious foods, primary education, clean water and sanitation, and emergency relief to help bring the number of preventable childhood deaths down from 19,000 to ZERO.

Pier 1 Imports began selling UNICEF greeting cards in 1985. During its successful 28-year partnership, Pier 1 Imports has raised more than $32 million for UNICEF.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in 190 countries and territories to save and improve children’s lives, providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.
