A Liverpool cosmetic clinic is backing a call for a strengthening of the country’s cosmetic standards. Mr Guiseppe Verri, Consultant Plastic Surgeon has seen patients with asymmetry, dropping eyelids and even nerve damage from incorrect and untrained administratiin.

A Liverpool cosmetic clinic is backing a call for a strengthening of the country’s cosmetic standards. In new guidelines just released, the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) says non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as Botox injections and dermal fillers should only be administered by trained doctors, nurses or dentists. It also says such treatments should only take place in licensed clinics with resuscitation equipment readily available.

Currently beauticians and others with no medical training are allowed to perform Botox treatments and dermal fillers right in your own home and this has led to rogue traders and the emergence of ‘botox parties’ where groups of friends gather to receive treatment.

Mr Guiseppe Verri , Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Rodney Street based Nu Cosmetic Clinic has witnessed the risks and results of non-surgical cosmetic treatments from untrained practitioners first hand: “People are willing to buy unlicensed products off the internet and have no idea what they are injecting into their faces. Many are even willing to inject it themselves or have the treatment carried out by someone whose experience consists of a one-day training course. Unfortunately the results can vary from drooping eyes to asymmetry and even nerve damage. My advice is to make sure you check out your practitioners credential and experience and that you always know what brand are being used and their history of safety.

NHS medical director, Sir Bruce Keogh, is currently carrying out a review into regulation of cosmetic interventions, including cosmetic surgery and is scheduled to report back to the Government in March with a series of recommendations.

Pankaj Kishore, Commercial Manager at Nu works alongside Mr Verri and is completely in favour of any improvements that he feels will benefit patients and the industry as a whole.
"At Nu, we only use fully trained, expert doctors, nurses and non-surgical practitioners to perform our non-surgical procedures, as we aspire to be a model of excellent practice. As with the rest of the country demand for cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments at our Liverpool clinic is rising year on year. Increased standards, once embedded will inspire greater trust and a transparent culture within our industry. Clients will then continue enjoy peace of mind in the knowledge that they are receiving the best possible standards of care if they use regulated providers.”
