Colle Farmers Market congratulates the Epps, a farming couple from South Dakota, who won an award for maintaining an eco-friendly farm.

On February 4, Colle Farmers Market issues a statement congratulating a South Dakotan couple that recently won the fifth annual Pork Environmental Stewardship Award for maintaining a consistently eco-friendly farm.

Ray and Pam Epp were decided as the 2013 award recipients by the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. “The award goes to a pork farmer to recognize his or her dedication to the industry through their environmental stewardship practices and community relations,” according to an article from the Yankton Daily Press.

The news of their nomination came as a surprise to the Epps, who were humbled at the realization that so many people paid attention to their farming techniques. According to the article, “nominees for the award were evaluated on their manure management systems, conservation practices, farm aesthetics, wildlife habitat promotion, odor-control strategies and innovative ideas used to protect the environment.”

Besides the hogs on their farm, the Epps have approximately 1,100 acres of alfalfa, soybeans and corn. Ray said that one of the most important parts of farming for him is to protect the environment. With this recognition bestowed upon them, Ray and Pam Epps feel that they have been successful in their eco-friendly farming practices.

Colle Farmers Market, a strong supporter of organic farms, congratulates the Epps on their award, stating that it is great to recognize farmers that undertake organic farming techniques despite the extra effort they require. Farmers that are environmentally irresponsible can see direct repercussions on their crops. Using safe and green farming techniques not only protects the environment, but it increases the quality of your crop yields as well.

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all consumers who live an organic and natural lifestyle with the ultimate goal of creating more sustainable farming and consumerism.
