Researchers from Belgium, France and Canada have mimicked the design of a bioluminescent firefly and worked out how to maximise the glow of LEDs by fifty-five per cent.
The recent study by the University of Namur in Belgium looked at the structure of the photuris firefly and found that their serrated scales on their abdomen enhance the glow emitted from it. It does this by minimising the internal reflections, meaning more light is expelled.
The scientists recreated the firefly’s serrated surface in the form of an LED overlayer, which increased extraction considerably. It’s hoped that this theory can be applied to existing diodes to reduce the amount of light lost to internal reflections.
Lights 4 Living stocks a wide range of LED lights that are ideal for home lighting and ceiling lights.
A spokesperson from Lights 4 Living said:
“LED lights are forming a huge part of the lighting industry at the moment, and this research will allow for them to be even more effective. LED lights use less energy and have a longer lifetime, with an average approximate lifetime of 10,000 hours. This makes them a perfect choice to use as home lighting.”
