Argyll, Scotland (PRWEB) February 05, 2013
The Village at Machrihanish Dunes was chosen as the #2 Development of the Year by Golf Inc. Magazine. This annual, global competition reviews and evaluates developments based on the vision of the development (50%), course routing (25%) and course aesthetics (25%). The panel of judges was comprised of an award-winning developer, an architect and a consultant.
Machrihanish Dunes is owned and operated by a division of Southworth Development of Newton, Massachusetts. President and CEO, David Southworth, commented on the award, “As a developer, there is real satisfaction when your vision becomes a reality. We chose this project because of the unique location and while we’ve developed a number of courses over the years, this one took us back to the way golf began. It also created a new environmental standard that we feel is the future of golf resort development. I consider it a real achievement that others notice and enjoy the hard work of this team effort.” Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club was ranked as #38 out of 100 links course in Great Britain by National Club Golfer, and has been consistently ranked in the Top 100 courses in the UK since opening in 2009. In addition, Machrihanish Dunes has won several accolades for sustainability and environmental friendliness, and hospitality awards for the hotels at The Village at Machrihanish Dunes.
The links course at Machrihanish Dunes was a labour of love for award-winning architect David McLay Kidd, who used to play in the dunes where the course is now situated, as a child. A true championship links course, Machrihanish Dunes was not constructed by modern methods, but created by hand following the natural lay of the land, with only seven of the course’s 259 acres being altered. Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club was the first 18-hole course to be built on a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI), and the first course to be built on the west coast of Scotland in more than 100 years. Machrihanish Dunes was also the first 18-hole course in the UK to receive certification by the Golf Environmental Organization (GEO), and maintains a strict management practice of not using chemical pesticides or fertilizers. Black Hebridean sheep are even used to help keep the rough in check the way courses did hundreds of years ago.
As the newest resort development in Argyll, Machrihanish Dunes will host a variety of international competitions in 2013 including: The Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championship Tournaments for Scotland to be held in April, the Machrihanish Dunes Hickory Open to be held in September, and the 15th Annual International Pairs Competition to be held in October, where pairs from up to 30 countries will battle for the championship.
The golf course is part of The Village at Machrihanish Dunes resort, which also includes The Ugadale and Royal Hotels, two historic hotels both lovingly restored and newly opened to great success in 2012. The Royal Hotel, features 23 marvellously-appointed rooms overlooking picturesque Campbeltown Harbour, and is also home to the spirited good times of The Black Sheep Pub and fine-dining of The Harbourview Grille. The Ugadale Hotel (Scottish Hotel Award’s 2012 “Golf Hotel of the Year”) offers 23 luxurious rooms and suites at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking the famed first tee of neighbouring Machrihanish Golf Club (Ranked No. 40 on National Club Golfer’s list). And just steps away lie the award-winning two-bedroom, two-bathroom Ugadale Cottages, providing luxurious, comfortable and private self-catering accommodation for families, travelling business executives or groups of golfers.
