Everybody goes through bad times, some even have had worse. Each and every single one has difficulties and stories to tell. A Pensioner due to poor health caused by boxing and CS Gas, author Boab Curran is one of them. In his poignant memoir, Heart of a Lamb Courage of a Lion, he tells how cruel life has been to him. He pours out all the sufferings and the hardships he has been through, with honesty and courage that inspires and motivates.
He grew up in a far from perfect family, with a father who becomes abusive when drunk. Being the eldest, The Author becomes the easy target. When his father is sober, he’s a normal person who makes effort to have a father-son bonding. When alcohol possesses him, however, he terrorizes the household and causes his family to suffer from low self-esteem. That seems to be where the problem comes from-low self-esteem. It’s really true that one’s childhood plays a great role in the growing up years.
He was picked on by the bullies in their school, and at one time, even caused him to have thirty-eight stitches inserted above his left eye and another fourteen in the left-hand side of his head. He was once in the mercy of a paedophile, a heinous experience that continuously haunts him. There are wounds that never show on the body, that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds. In August 1962, he began his boxing career. He won the Scottish Junior Title as well as the Army Cadet Force Championship, but he did not feel that he is above average as his father often berates him when he is present. Later on, he became a British champion and a Commando, proving his worth.
He is a victim, with mental anguish that never leaves. And often, it comes out in many forms. For others, they cry out when they think about it. For him, it spills out in a rage. There will come a time when everything spews out in a torrent. However, it will never disappear. It’s either one fight or flights.
By sharing his experiences in his book, Heart of a Lamb Courage of a Lion, The Author is able to help others who went through similar circumstances, if not to fully heal the wound, but to at least ease the burden and make them realize that they are not the only one who suffers.
