Tuition-Free “Blended” Public High School Redefines Education for 21st Century Learners, Melding Classroom and e-learning in Unique Campus Environment

Indianapolis high school students will have an exciting new “blended” public school option for the 2013-2014 school year that delivers a truly 21st century high school experience. Nexus Academy of Indianapolis, a “blended” public high school that combines the best of online and classroom learning in a dynamic campus setting, has been unanimously approved by the Indiana Charter School Board for the 2013-2014 school year.

Nexus Academy of Indianapolis is a tuition-free, open enrollment, college preparatory public high school for 21st century learners. Intentionally small sized, the school will serve a maximum of 300 students to ensure each student receives focused, personal attention. It will offer a comprehensive high school experience in a highly personalized, innovative, and flexible school setting. Students will attend the school’s uniquely designed physical campus, where dedicated, certified teachers specially trained in blended learning interact with students both online and on-site. Campus-based “Success Coaches” help guide students through the curriculum, and guidance counselors will help them navigate college and career decisions.

Students will attend classes on a morning or afternoon session, ensuring an optimal student-to-staff ratio while allowing time in the school day for internships, college dual enrollment, and pursuit of personal passions such as sports or performing arts. All Nexus Academy of Indianapolis students will be provided with a mobile computer and other technology tools, allowing them to work anywhere within the Nexus Academy school as well as beyond, 24/7.

Enrollment will officially open at Nexus Academy of Indianapolis on March 4, 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year, but the school has already begun outreach throughout the Indianapolis metro area. School leaders expect Nexus Academy of Indianapolis to appeal to a wide range of students, from those who are ready to accelerate through high school to those who are looking for a more flexible and efficient academic setting that allows them time to pursue career, artistic or athletic interests.

Nexus Academy of Indianapolis will have a strong focus on academics and college readiness, and will foster an appreciation of lifelong learning. Students will have access to core academic courses in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English as well as Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Foreign language offerings will include Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, German, Latin, and Sign Language. A wide array of electives will round out students’ educations and offer opportunities to explore different subjects like Digital Arts, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Engineering Design, Marine Science, and Game Design. Students may also participate in clubs and activities including Digital Storytelling, Debate and Chess, a Yearbook, an Environmental club, and much more. A robust education management system, Connexus®, will tie the online community together and provide students with access to lessons anywhere they have an Internet connection.

School officials are currently exploring campus sites in and around the greater Indianapolis area, and will soon announce both the school’s location and its Principal. Following a design custom-created by Godshall Kane Architects LLC, a Pennsylvania-based firm that specializes in school spaces, the Nexus Academy of Indianapolis campus will include “team” areas with casual seating for both collaborative and individual work, seminar-style classrooms where students meet with teachers in small groups, hands-on science and art labs, a café, and a fitness center outfitted with gym equipment and offering unique fitness options through qualified personal trainers.

Nexus Academy of Indianapolis will be operated by an independent, non-profit charter school board known as Better Blended Learning for Indiana, with its curriculum and other services provided by contract from Connections Learning, a division of Connections Education (, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable online and blended learning, which is accredited by AdvancED.
