Author Dale F. Shaffer comes by his expertise in the subject naturally, having served as a state trooper in Ohio, chief of police in Ohio and Illinois, and as a U.S. Marine.

Lieutenant Ed Slate of the Chicago Police Department suspects that Circuit Court Judge W.C. Hayes might also be on the payroll of the Chicago Outfit, notorious for corrupting unions, casinos, city council officials, and even some cops. Now, according to this new novel, the Mob might be branching out and influencing the court system. There will be risks to his career, his life, and – more importantly – his family.

The thriller "His Honor" follows the intricacies of an investigation into why cases heard in one Chicago courtroom repeatedly fail to receive justice. Even in a murder case, the judge gives a directed verdict of not guilty, saying the State failed to establish probable cause. Lieutenant Slate battles constant pressure from departmental and city politics as he leads 54 detectives in Area 3’s Robbery/Homicide Unit on Chicago’s north side, things really begin to heat up as key witnesses in his secret investigation start turning up dead.

Set in a city with its own vibrant character, the book delivers both a tale of suspense and an eye-opening look at the internal workings of the justice system.
