On February 6, 2013, Laugh Staff responds to Tom Fletcher’s remarkable wedding speech video which went viral last month and earned itself high marks in the history of funny speeches.
A recent article in The Independent describes Tom Fletcher’s wedding speech, which was uploaded as a video and quickly went viral. The speech covered typical material for a groom’s speech, but was unusual in its delivery – it was sung.
The article reports, “In the speech, Fletcher diligently bigs up his best man, flatters the bridesmaids, thanks both sets of parents and gushes over his bride. It’s a little on the long side, but it’s by-the-book stuff. Except for the fact that he sings it. All 14 minutes, 40 seconds of it. To the tune of McFly’s No 1 hits, ‘Obviously’ and ‘It’s All About You’. And then he throws in a children’s choir at the end.”
According to the article, Fletcher is, by his own description, not much for public speaking. He is, however, one of the lead vocalists of the hit English pop rock band McFly. He chose to stick to his rock-star roots in preparing his wedding speech, and succeeded in charming his guests as well as over four million YouTube viewers, according to the article. Throughout the video, Fletcher sings to his entire wedding party, from the ushers to his new wife, thanking everyone for their support and attendance.
The article includes general tips for the perfect groom’s speech: “Sung or not, the rules for grooms don’t change. Keep it short: everyone is starving and dying for you to hand over to the best man. This is not the time to try out edgy ‘new material’. Don’t spend longer talking about your love for your best man than for your bride. (I’ve heard it done.) Crying is OK, but not so much that you can’t get your words out. And, if you must do a McFly, remember, it’s not all about you.”
Laugh Staff representative Josh Womack responds to Fletcher’s unusual speech. “Tom Fletcher’s speech has all the essential elements of a brilliant wedding delivery – humor, authenticity, self-deprecation. He lost a few points for lack of brevity, but makes up for it with charm and force of presentation. Too bad we all can’t be like Tom Fletcher. Most of us won’t be serenading our wedding party and getting applauded for it. For those who are tone-deaf to the subtleties of good speech-giving, the most important factor in preparing a speech might be having someone to help write it.”
