Saul was an intense, scholarly young man, raised in a devout Jewish home where he was encouraged to study his family’s traditions and history, notes this new novel. Ultraconservative, Saul self-identified as a Pharisee, and his endless curiosity was piqued when he learned of the execution of a man called Jesus by the governor, Pilate; when Saul happens upon the trial of Peter, one of Jesus’ close associates who argues that the Pharisee leadership played a role in the execution, he’s baffled. What did the Jewish leaders have to do with affairs of state?
Determined to learn more, Saul embarks on a quest for knowledge that takes him down roads he never dreamed he’d travel. With permission from the Pharisee leaders, Saul decides to go on a fact-finding mission to follow the activities of Peter and his followers, with the intent of capturing them and returning them to Jerusalem. As he moves from city to city with the men, Saul is suddenly stricken blind. Frightened, and convinced this is the action of God, Saul aborts his mission and prepares to return home empty-handed. Miraculously, one of the followers of Jesus appears at his doorstep, insisting he’s been sent by God to restore Saul’s sight. This act led Saul to take Jesus into his heart and join his followers. As the years pass, Saul shared his testimony and encouraged others to embrace Jesus. Saul’s path was not smooth, but his belief in Jesus was unshakable.
"Saul: A Man Obsessed" presents an interesting theory about the personality of one of the Bible’s most prominent figures, the Apostle Paul. Author Jack Foster, Ph.D., has been the minister of three protestant churches as well as an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice at Youngstown State University. Foster was a public policy consultant on education and criminal justice issues at the state and national levels, and he served as a cabinet secretary for the Commonwealth of Kentucky for four years. Foster’s deep interest in the personal life of the Apostle Paul led him to write this, his first novel.
