“There is so much focus on providing meals to the underserved at Thanksgiving and Christmas,” says Adam Esmaeel, Harris YMCA teen director. “Our teen leaders believe that supporting our neighbors is a year-round proposition.”

As Valentine’s Day approaches, two dozen teenagers are thinking about love. However, it has nothing to do with romance. The Teen Leaders Club at the Harris YMCA will demonstrate what it means to love a neighbor by serving dinner to 300 homeless Charlotteans on Saturday, February 9 at the Harris YMCA.

“There is so much focus on providing meals to the underserved at Thanksgiving and Christmas,” says Adam Esmaeel, Harris YMCA teen director. “Our teen leaders believe that supporting our neighbors is a year-round proposition.”

The Harris YMCA Teen Leaders Club is comprised of 28 teens that develop leadership skills through service activities. To prepare the Love Thy Neighbor dinner, the club spent weeks collecting donations, forming community partnerships and planning for the event.

“They have incredible ideas and a real passion for this service project,” explains Esmaeel. The club has planned and delivered the dinner since 2007.

In addition to dinner, guests of the Love Thy Neighbor dinner will receive free haircuts provided by Salon 42 and a bag of donated toiletries. The YMCA will provide transportation to the Harris YMCA from local homeless shelters.
