Ultimately, we believe these regional events are important grass-roots level efforts that will actually attract more young women professionals to this industry, while helping to alleviate the technology talent shortage.

Alliance Global Services is proud to announce its participation in two upcoming regional conferences focused on advancing the role of women in technology. NWCT, the Network of Women in Computer Technology, will hold its 32nd Annual Conference on March 16, 2013; the 2nd Annual Philly Women in Tech Summit will follow on April 20, 2013. Alliance is participating in planning, sponsorships, and speaking roles at these events.
“Many people believe the gender gap has been closing in our industry, but unfortunately, this is not the reality,” comments John Castleman, President and CEO. Research reveals that less than 10% of undergraduate degrees in technology are awarded to women; furthermore, the percentage of computing occupations held by women has steadily declined since 1991.* Castleman continues, “Alliance is committed to supporting the growth of young women in technology because of the exceptional professional opportunities that exist, and the trend that fewer women are pursuing careers in technology. The talent shortage in this industry is a challenge for all of us—even those not directly in the technology business. As we say at Alliance, we are all in the software business, and developing new products of the future will, in part, depend on our ability to source highly skilled technology professionals.”
Philly Women in Tech is dedicated to supporting, challenging, and empowering women in all stages and areas of technology careers. The Summit will feature workshops addressing User Experience, Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Application Development. All proceeds from the event will support TechGirlz, a non-profit organization committed to empowering girls to be future technology leaders.
“We are happy to host this year’s planning sessions for the upcoming summit in support of our commitment to TechGirlz,” stated Liz Smith, Alliance’s Vice President, Human Resources. “Alliance also sponsored TechGirlz’ day camp last summer, where over 25 middle-school girls participated in business development competitions, complete with fundraising, company websites, and marketing. The ideas that came out of that competition were impressive, and we look forward to continuing this relationship,” added Smith. Alliance plans to sponsor the TechGirlz camp again this summer, as well as to provide ongoing mentoring of TechGirlz participants, and support future events held by the Philadelphia chapter. “While many items are still in the planning stages, Alliance will continue to work with TechGirlz in support of its mission to empower girls to become future technology leaders,” added Smith.
In addition to TechGirlz, Smith will be speaking at the upcoming NWCT Conference, joining keynote speaker Eloise Young, CIO of Philadelphia Gas Works. The mission of the Network of Women in Computer Technology is to advance careers for professionals in Information Technology through education, mentoring, and providing outstanding professional networking opportunities. With Smith’s ongoing involvement in NWCT, Alliance hopes to play a role in creating greater awareness of the challenges facing the technology industry.
“Ultimately, we believe these regional events are important grass-roots level efforts that will actually attract more young women professionals to this industry, while helping to alleviate the technology talent shortage. Alliance is proud to be at the forefront and pleased to see Philadelphia as a regional hub for the advancement of women in technology,” noted Castleman.
