The Illinois Association of County Board Members and Commissioners (IACBMC) and Coast2Coast Rx announced today that they have partnered to bring the free discount prescription program to residents of Illinois. With the endorsements of 10 counties statewide and dozens of townships, the Coast2Coast Rx card program has reached thousands of residents, collectively saving them millions of dollars on prescription costs.

IACBMC—a non-partisan, nonprofit association providing educational, advocacy and other programs to leaders of the state’s many counties—endorsed the Coast2Coast Rx for its health and savings benefits to constituents, its ease of use and its ability to serve as a source of revenue for county programs. The free program offers savings of up to 75 percent on prescription drugs with a nationwide average savings of 60 percent—and through a distinctive feature of the partnership, Coast2Coast Rx provides $1.25 for each prescription filled using the card to the participating township, city or county for public programs and projects.

“Making the choice for the county to participate in this program was an easy decision,” said James Bohnsack, former Chairman of Rock Island County, Illinois, the first county in the state to install the program. “The program comes at no cost to the county and actually will generate revenue for the general fund that will go directly back into services for our communities.”

As Coast2Coast Rx markets and distributes the cards, the program does not require additional administrative work by public employees and absolutely no cost to the participating township or county. Public officials recognize the program’s ability to positively affect their communities and its potential to improve health and financial outcomes for their constituents.

"The Coast2Coast Rx card has already had a tremendous impact on residents," said Kelly Murray, executive director of IACBMC. "Since we launched the program last year over 35,000 prescriptions have been filled, saving Illinoisans more than $1.3 million. Through our coalition of counties, we aim to help many more residents offset their rising medication costs and live more comfortably."

There are no eligibility requirements or restrictions for the program, and the card comes with no membership paperwork, fees or expiration date. The easy-to-use card, which is accepted for prescription fills at major chain and many independent pharmacies, also offers a network of discounted vision, dental and hearing services, lab and imaging tests, diabetes supplies and even pet prescriptions and veterinary care through partner programs. Coast2Coast Rx’s significant benefits will offer relief to consumers with little or no insurance benefits, but it can also be used by those who have insufficient coverage or high deductibles and in some cases can even help offset the costs of the Medicare Part D “donut hole.”

“As elected officials, I believe we should do everything in our means to help the public control health care costs,” said James McMahon, Vermilion County Board member and president of the IACBMC. “I am especially pleased for what this program will mean to Illinois residents who are uninsured or under-insured. Many seniors are living on fixed incomes that often force them to choose between buying groceries and paying for prescriptions that keep them alive. We need to make sure people can afford their medications.”

Bringing this financial relief that the card can provide and the health benefits that cardholders may experience to as many people as possible is Coast2Coast Rx’s goal in partnering with IACBMC, explains Chief Marketing Officer Marty Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., the company administering the discount prescription card. “IACBMC represents millions of diverse constituents throughout Illinois, all of whom can explore the benefits of the Coast2Coast Rx card,” stated Dettelbach. “By working in partnership with the great board and staff at IACBMC we can more effectively reach the leaders of individual counties and get the Coast2Coast Rx card into the hands of those who need it.”

In order to continually improve users’ experience, Coast2Coast Rx has recently made upgrades to its website, where consumers can print their free card, read a health blog and find links to the program’s Facebook and Twitter profiles. For immediate savings on prescription costs, Illinois residents can find their county or township using and print their free card.
