Following an article published in Bed Times Magazine, outlining how Hilton has started a mattress recycling program, Online Bed Quilt commends the hotel line for recycling and reminds people of the possible funding benefits in recycling mattresses.

On February 7, Online Bed Quilt, a leading mattress store, responds to an article posted by Bed Times Magazine detailing Hilton Hotel’s plan to recycle mattresses.

The article, posted by Bed Times Magazine, said Hilton Worldwide has announced a plan to recycle old mattresses as its hotels switch to install new Serta mattresses and box springs. The article said Hilton plans to recycle about 85 percent of all its mattresses and bed sets. The pieces from recycled mattresses will be dismantled and used for other items.

According to the article, Randy Gaines, vice president of engineering operations of the Americas at Hilton Worldwide, said they have tens of thousands of mattresses that could be broken down and used for other things.

“Our hotels have purchased more than 50,000 mattresses in the past two years in the U.S. alone,” he said in the article. “This program presents a great opportunity for our hotels globally and offers cost savings to owners and underscores Hilton Worldwide’s commitment to further reduce our waste output.”

Justin Maas, a representative from mattress store Online Bed Quilt, said more hotels should recycle mattresses. “If you think about it, hotels have hundreds of rooms with multiple beds,” he said. “That’s a lot of mattresses. And when they get old, it would be such a waste to throw them out. Recycling these mattresses can help save space in landfills, create jobs and even provide quality, recycled mattresses to people at a cheaper price.”

He also said that in some states or counties, hotels or motels recycling mattresses might even get money back for being eco-friendly. “I’ve heard of some local governments actually returning money to places that donate mattresses,” he said. “It seems like a great idea and I think more states should have mattress recycling programs.”

The article revealed that DH Hospitality would be assisting in the recycling process. As a leading hospitality service provider in Virginia, DH Hospitality will make sure that all the Hilton mattresses and box springs are recycled properly, and not refurbished or sold again, the article said. DH Hospitality will require a certificate to prove each mattress was brought to the recycling facility.
