For associates of Shaw Sports Turf, watching Super Bowl XLVII was an exciting and proud experience.
After all, the Dalton, Georgia-based company, which manufactures and installs engineered turf systems for sports facilities, has fields with both the Ravens and the 49ers. While Shaw Sports Turf has practice fields with the 49ers and several other teams, the relationship with the Ravens is special. The Ravens’ 109,000 square foot practice field and 108,000 square foot game field at M&T Bank Stadium both feature Shaw’s Momentum 51 product, a relationship which has been in place for a decade.
“It was an exciting game to watch and there was tremendous interest from the people at Shaw Sports Turf,” said Chuck McClurg, Vice President of Shaw Sports Turf. “Our people take a great deal of pride in making the best product and that product’s role leading up to the Ravens’ victory in the Super Bowl.”
The game was rife with interesting storylines, including the head-to-head matchup of the Harbaugh brothers, Ray Lewis playing his last game, Jacoby Jones’ 108-yard kickoff return, the lights going out in the SuperDome, and many more.
The Ravens, however, put together a strong first half, electrified the crowd to open the second half with a 108-yard kickoff return, and held on in second half for a thrilling victory. Baltimore has been a team on the rise over the past few years, and the victory was fitting.
Great players and coaching notwithstanding, the rise of the Ravens has taken place on Shaw Sports Turf fields, which have played a significant role since the Raven practice and play their home games on the artificial surface.
For the Ravens, the win marked their second Super Bowl victory, with the first being in 2000. Joe Flacco won the game’s MVP award, winning his 62nd game in his first five seasons. Since 2010, the team is 19-3 in the regular season on its home field at M&T Bank Stadium, with a 15-game home game winning streak which lasted from 2010-2012. Over the past three seasons, the team is 40-16, giving them a .714 winning percentage.
The Shaw Sports Turf Momentum system that the Ravens and 49ers have mirrors the same look and feel as natural grass and is known for its durability and overall performance. With a 2.5-inch pile height and a two-inch infill that is a 50-50 mix of sand and rubber, the Momentum 51 system offers the best combination of firmness, speed and safety.
