Gregory L. Bentley, partner at Shernoff Bidart Echeverria Bentley, was named the 2013 William Shernoff Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Consumer Attorneys of Inland Empire.

Mr. Bentley had two major trial victories in 2012. One involved an accident on Route 138 in San Bernardino and the other involving an on-duty police officer in Monterey Park. Both cases were jury trials which led to million dollar verdicts on behalf of his clients.

"It's an honor to receive this award," said Mr. Bentley. "The opportunity to represent good, honest people who need help is always a huge reward in and of itself."

Mr. Bentley's representation of David Evans was eerily similar to the recent CA Route 38 tour bus crash which occurred in February 2013. The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 138 and Mountain Road on April 29, 2009, causing brain and spinal cord injuries to Mr. Evans (Evans v. State of CA number CIVVS1002497, San Bernardino Superior Court). The 66-year-old Lancaster resident requires 24-hour nursing care for the rest of his life. A jury ruled that Caltrans was responsible for the dangerous intersection and awarded Mr. Evans and his wife more than $31.5 million.

In another jury trial verdict in 2012, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury in Glendale, CA awarded a Monterey Park Police Department Sergeant and his wife $2,239,366.26 after he was severely injured in a traffic accident in 2009 (Wiese et al. v. Athens Disposal Company, Inc. et al. Case No. GC044216, LA Superior Court). Scott Wiese, a 26-year veteran and sergeant, suffered severe injuries while on-duty for the City of Monterey Park. An Athens Services truck, driving on the wrong side of the street, pulled in front of Officer Wiese and slammed into his motorcycle causing significant orthopedic and urological injuries.

"When there is human suffering, as there was in both of these cases or as there is in this recent Route 38 bus accident, you realize that people truly need an advocate," Mr. Bentley added. "Being that advocate is an important part of our legal society and I'm glad to be a part of it."

Both of these verdicts were huge successes for Mr. Bentley's clients who were in desperate need of financial assistance to help them with their ongoing medical costs.
