Taxpayers can have their wage garnishment modified or cancelled once they are approved to enter into a relief program with the IRS.

CTR is advising taxpayers on how to stop wage garnishment when they are faced with IRS debt collection efforts. Wage garnishment is a form of levy that the IRS can use to regain the balance owed. During garnishment, the IRS forces the taxpayer’s employer to withhold some of their earnings until the full balance has been paid.
“We wanted to advise taxpayers about wage garnishment because it's an IRS levy that is very difficult to have stopped." A CTR Spokesperson said.
CTR warns taxpayers who may know that garnishing wages is often used by creditors to collect on debt owed, that the IRS has more power than typical creditors because they do not have to follow regulations for wage garnishment by state. There are limitations, however. Only 50% of a taxpayer’s paycheck can be taken, and wage garnishment cannot cause a taxpayer to enter a state of “financial hardship”.
CTR advises anyone in debt to the IRS that withholding money from paychecks is not the only form of wage garnishment used. The IRS can contact a business owner’s customers and require that outstanding balances be sent to the IRS in place of the business. They also repossess every part of the business, including the property, equipment and inventory.
“The good news about wage garnishment,” according to a CTR spokesperson, “is that those who owe IRS money can settle their debt and remove the levy against them. If you work with tax experts to find a debt resolution, the IRS will cease its collection efforts.”
Taxpayers can have their wage garnishment modified or cancelled once they are approved to enter into a relief program with the IRS. Other individuals have had their wage garnishment removed after paying off their debt. Prevention of levy actions is crucial to any taxpayer owing the IRS. CTR wishes to remind all taxpayers to pay all necessary future tax debt as it comes and keep compliant with the IRS.
